Learning mathematics can be made easier and enjoyable if it includes activities and games.
To make it more engaging, and relevant for everyday life, check these activities and resources. These can help your child love Math like never before.
Math in Nature and Outer Space. Who says you have to be answering drills when learning Math?
You can see amazing shapes and patterns in nature. You can also learn about the The Fibonacci Sequence, named for the famous mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci, a simple sequence, yet with a profound pattern. The numbers in the sequence are often seen in nature like in the number of spirals in a pine cone, seeds in a sunflower, or the number of petals on a flower.
The outer space can teach your kids Math, too. We see a unique symmetry in outer space and that is the symmetry between the earth, moon and sun that makes an eclipse possible. Because of Math, you see, the moon is approximately 400 times smaller than the sun, but it is also approximately 400 times further away.
Math in Pretend Play (Buy and Sell). Money Math is easy to learn when you use pretend play. This can teach children skills like identifying coins or bills, and counting money.
We made our own Philippine Money for pretend play. You can download the PH money cards here: Philippine Peso Banknotes
Practical Life Skills. Math skills such as sequencing plans, telling time, measuring (use scales, cups, spoons of different sizes in baking or cooking), and budgeting, are essential skills children should learn. By just including these in everyday chores and responsibilities can give mathematical vocabulary and a practical understanding of this area of Math. These activities can give a math-rich environment without a complicated curriculum.
