Parol is a Filipino Christmas lantern. Parols are traditionally constructed using bamboo and Japanese paper, and are illuminated with candles or lamps.
We made our first ever parol using Museo Pambata’s Star of Hope. The orignal kit contains ar ready-made star and all you have to do is decorate it.
We requested for an unassembled one and we are thankful that they granted our request so we can make the parol from scratch.
Materials for making a parol:
- 10 (flat) bamboo sticks
- 10 rubberbands or strings
- 5 pegs or dowels
- white/ colored papers
- glue
- scissors
- decorating/ craft materials
- cut-out cardboard
- strings
Steps on how to make a parol:
- Tie 2 sticks with a rubber band or string to make a ” V “. Make 4 sets.
- Connect the ends to make the star shape.
- Weave a stick to create the top of the star and connect the ends using rubber bands.
- Make 2 stars. Glue and secure where all the sticks meet.
- Glue the pegs onto the intersections of one of the stars.
- Glue the top of the pegs and attach to the other star. Tie all points.
- Using a glue, attach your paper to the star and trim with scissors.
- Repeat on the other side, leaving a hole in the middle for your light. Cover the sides.
- Decorate using colored papers and other craft materials (sequins, glitter, etc)
- Make the parol tails. Use the cardbord & string to hold & to attach the tails.
The annual Star of Hope initiative of Museo Pambata is back to bring the spirit of giving and arts this season! Be part of the initiative by owning a DIY parol inclusive of a design package, and make children happy by giving them a great Noche Buena this Christmas!
Proceeds from this project will be given to Museo Pambata’s chosen Orphanage organization. It is also available in the Designers’ Holiday Bazaar. See you there! For further inquiries, don’t hesitate to send a message toMr. Ryan Vicente at 09988818227, Or send an email at ryan.museopambata@gmail.com.
