Every home must have a dictionary. There are several choices but for toddlers, I decided to get Disney My First Picture Dictionary. It’s full of fun pictures for over 900 words.
It’s not a complete word list. There are some words that I we use often yet it is not included in the Disney My First Picture Dictionary. So it really won’t be a full reference for words. You might need a real dictionary by Webster’s or Oxford’s.
But for beginners, this dictionary is a good introduction. It doesn’t look intimidating. In fact, it encourages kids to open and read the dictionary because of it’s familiar Disney characters and fun pictures in every page. There’s Mickey Mouse, Nemo, Lightning McQueen, Peter Pan, Leelo, Bambi and pretty much everyone from the Disney cartoons.
The definitions are easy to understand also. Plus there is a sentence at the end of each word being used in context.
The Disney My First Picture Dictionary is in hardcover and has about 140 pages in full color. It is not designed for academic use. More like a nice to have for your home library.
If you wish your child to learn new words and to learn how to use the dictionary, this is a nice starter kit for them.
I bought them when Gab was still about 2 years old. He didn’t opened it as much. But now that he is four, he like to scan them from cover to cover. He loves the pictures and likes reading a few of the words. If we have a chance, we try to look for new words that we can learn.
