The New Reading with Phonics book provide a list several words to build phonemic awareness. It looks complete with word selections ideal for beginners and words ideal for more advanced readers.
We used phonics when we taught Gab how to read. Through phonics, he can read almost anything including long words and weird letter combinations. He is sometimes correct and at times he can be wrong. But we continue to encourage him to read using phonics until he get more confident to read on his own.
What amazes us, is he is able to spell words through phonics too. It saves us from teaching him how to spell or by making him memorize a list of vocabulary words. Instead, he learn to listen to the sound of the words, and spell the words through the sounds he hears. Again, he can be right and he can be wrong. But we continue to encourage and let him build his confidence in spelling through phonics.
I bought The New Reading with Phonics books when Gab already knows how to read. It was more of a checklist for us to know which letter and sounds he still needs to practice and be more familiar with.
For example, Gab cannot pronounce the letter R properly yet. So roller is yollel, red is yed and driver is dyay-veh. The New Reading with Phonics book provides a list of words with the letter R where we can practice saying its letter sound.
What’s Inside the Book
The New Reading with Phonics is a versatible book.
It can be used as an introduction to the alphabet. The first pages of the book is a list of letters in the alphabet. However, is not arrange alphabetically. So it is not from A-Z. I am not sure what is the basis of the sequence. Probably based on the level of difficulty of the letter sound.
It can also be used as a storybook. Part of the book are short stories with emphasis on the phonic sound.
It can be used as a vocabulary builder. There are plenty of words in the book that is grouped by phonics. I am sure you can find new words to learn in every page.
Finally, it is very helpful for learning phonics. The words are grouped strategically to make reading easier. I love how the words would progress by adding one letter at a time to change the phonic sound. From rip to ripe. From rid to ride. From fill to file. Children can easily see the pattern and apply it to reading.
The New Reading with Phonics is available at leading bookstores for 145 PHP.
Suggestions on How to Use the Book
1. Use the book like a textbook. Read the words starting from page one and progress until the last page.
2. Move from one phonic sound in your preferred order or based on your child’s interest.
3. Make flash cards using the phonics from the book. Change the words once it is mastered.
4. Write rhyming sentences or poems using the words in the book and read them together.
Daddy Tips for Learning Phonics
1. Learning to read can be overwhelming. The child doesn’t need to be able to read all the words in a dictionary. Be patient. Start with simple 3-letter words. The more familiar the words are – like cat, dog, run – the faster they usually learn.
2. It can take months to see significant progress. But try to notice the subtle improvements and celebrate them with simple rewards.
3. Be creative. There are a lot of crafts to help in learning phonics. From flash cards, letter wheels, ref magnets and more, these methods make learning fun and enjoyable. Check out our board in Pinterest for some ideas. Don’t forget to follow us in Pinterest. 😀

This book seems very helpful in teaching kids how to read. By the way, where can I purchase it?
Hi Chelley, we got our copy from National Bookstore. I think it is still available.
I’ll check it out. Thanks =)
Thanks for the excellent review of this excellent phonics method. I teach reading in Odessa, TX USA. A friend is going to buy me a copy in a few weeks when they visit family in the Philippines.
