Our Homeschool Typing Lessons and Apps

In today’s digital world, typing is an important skill. It is considered as one of the most essential computer and technical skills for students to learn.

Good typing and keyboard skills will give advantage to your child. They can get their computer tasks done faster and perform productive tasks instead of correcting errors.

And we all know how a bad typo error can make or break a message. Typing skills are really important!

Typing doesn’t have to be boring and monotonous. There are plenty of FREE typing apps for iPad and Free Online Typing Lessons. Gab and I are trying them and they are fun.

I started Gab with his typing lessons this week. He didn’t seem to get bored with it. In fact, he kept on practicing even after we are finished.

We are using a iPad Mini and a Logitech K480 Bluetooth Keyboard. I recommend using a Bluetooth keyboard instead of the onscreen keyboard of an iPad. For newer iPad models the Apple Smart Keyboard will work fine too.

For the apps, we are using the Animal Typing App and The Vehicles Typing App. Both apps can be downloaded for free but you need to pay to unlock more features and lessons.

I find Animal Typing great for beginners. Gab finds it interesting to use too. It has a scoring system that shows your progress. It has sample lessons for kids and standard lessons for adults. You need to buy the full version to unlock all lessons.

The Vehicles Typing doesn’t have a structured lesson like Animal Typing. However, its interface is more like a game. It has cars on it and Gab likes it instantly. You can buy the full version to unlock more vehicles and more lessons.

There are also FREE online typing lessons that works well for laptops or desktops.

Keyboard Ninja is an online game to practice typing. It is similar to the Fruit Ninja game but instead of slashing the fruits with your fingers, your type the letter attached to the fruit. It’s fun but it doesn’t provide a structured lesson. It is great for a taking a break.

I was preparing for the usual typing lesson where Gab would copy from a typing lesson book. But these apps are more engaging,
