We love traveling and we always look forward to family adventures. But how about homeschooling? Do we just stop learning while we are on vacation?
We usually leave our books when we are on a trip, expcept for a chapter book that Gab is reading at that particular time. Learning happens on the go. The lack of (academic/text) book time does not indicate a lack of learning time.
So how do you homeschool while traveling?
Study the Places You’re Traveling To
We usually do this weeks before the trip. We read about the place, how far is the travel time, the capital, the currency, the weather or season and what are the famous landmarks we can see or the place is known for.
Use Maps
Maps are always interesting – whether it’s a road map or a subway train map. Map reading is considered an important skill for building children’s spatial reasoning skills and helping them make sense of our world.
We remembered making him a map for his first Educational Tour in Cebu to kick of our history class.
Visit Attractions
Kids like zoos, farms, rainforest, museums, historic sites, and other places of interest.
Learn the Language
Know commonly used words and how to greet the locals using their language or dialect. This is a great activity for children.
Look for Hands-on Activities
Kids remember it more when they experience it. They remember their first climb to a mountain summit, first time to swim with the whale sharks , first time to hold a spider or seeing different types of bridges up close.
There is always something to learn in each new place. Learning can happen while you’re at the park, exploring the city on a bus, playing at the farm, or even just shopping.
