Halo-halo Histories is a history book. It talks about the prehistory of the Philippines. This book is not the typical Philippine history (text) book. This supplementary material is entertaining, informative and easy to understand.
Reading this book will let you learn different creation myths, how the Philippine Islands were formed, the first Filipinos, and their lifestyles.
We like the trivia included in the book. These are the “Tsitsirya” printed in some pages of the book which contains bits of information related to a particular topic.
We got confused on the “Weather-Weather Lang Yan!” section which teaches the major seasons as shown in the picture below. We even reached out to Tahanan Books for feedback.
Learning how to ask good questions about what we read always gives us reasons to confirm and learn new things. As for us, we will stick to the classifications for tropical climate – rainy or wet season, and the dry season. This is discussed by PAGASA on their website, seasons based on temperature and amount of rainfall:
Using temperature and rainfall as bases, the climate of the country can be divided into two major seasons: (1) the rainy season, from June to November; and (2) the dry season, from December to May. The dry season may be subdivided further into (a) the cool dry season, from December to February; and (b) the hot dry season, from March to May.
We started reading this book in 2018 but decided to pause on it. We are revisiting the book this year in time for learning about the Prehistoric Philippines.
Halo-halo Histories is a good book when learning the prehistoric details of the country. You can use this and supplement with other learning materials.
Halo-halo Histories, written by Michelle Suarez, Jonee Garcia, Divine Reyes, Illustrated by Benjor Catindig, is published by Tahanan Books for Young Readers.
You can read book 2: Cashaysayan: A History of Philippine Money book review here. There are many reasons to love this book!
