May 28 is Philippines’ National Flag Day. Today. May 28, 2024, marks the 59th observance of Flag Day that began after President Diosdado Macapagal issued Proclamation No. 360 on March 6, 1965, noting that “our flag was first raised and received its baptism of fire and victory in the battle of Alapan, Imus, Cavite, on May 28, 1898.”
Flag Day in the Philippines is marked with the raising of the national flag. The flag is permanently displayed from May 28 to June 12 (Independence Day) by all government offices and agencies, businesses, educational institutions and private residences.
The flag of the Philippines shall be blue, white and red with an eight-rayed golden-yellow sun and three five-pointed stars, as consecrated and honored by the people.
Blue Stripe – symbolizes peace, truth, and justice
White Triangle – represents equality and the Katipunan nationalist organization
Red Stripe – represents patriotism and valor
Three Stars – symbolizes Luzon, Panay, and Mindanao (Luzon, Mindanao, and Panay where this revolutionary movement started)
Sun – stands for liberty
Eight Rays – signifies the eight provinces that revolted against Spain – Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Laguna, and Batangas
